Tanks in Tiananmen Square: A Study of Emergent Behavior
At Designed & Made, we embrace the challenge of experimenting with innovative techniques, seamlessly integrating art into both residential and commercial spaces. By continuously testing and mastering these techniques, we evolve as artisans, pushing the boundaries of creativity. Our most recent project is a 20×10′ art piece titled Tanks in Tiananmen Square. This work features a gilded brass leaf frame, mirrored brass inlays, integrated LED lighting, and color-shifting automotive paint applied to a cascading geometric pattern.

In the upper left portion of this photo you will see Genius Loci, which started as an organic hand drawing which was machined with 3D topographical features and finished using a combination of oil paint, gold leaf, silver leaf and platinum leaf. The methods used range from the ancient to the modern.

Tanks in Tiananmen Square: A Study of Emergent Behaviors
This piece draws inspiration from a pivotal moment in history, capturing the raw, undeniable emotion of helplessness in the face of overwhelming power. The central figure serves as both a literal and symbolic representation of an unstoppable force and the human struggle against it.
In this piece, the tank is symbolized by the parametric pattern cut into the canvas, color-shifting paint, and polished brass inlays—representing the elite team behind the artwork, an unstoppable force of creativity and expertise. It is a study of synergy, where the combined prowess of the creators leads to emergent behavior, making any competition irrelevant.
Mirrored elements within the artwork further amplify this dynamic, creating a reflection of self. As the viewer gazes upon the piece, they are forced to confront their own position within the power struggle—challenged to see themselves both as part of the chaos and part of the system. This reflection deepens the experience, revealing not only the power of the tank but the vulnerability of the self caught within it.
A story on this art piece was featured in The Pioneer Press.
